Solectek Awarded Contract to Provide for Nationwide WiMAX Network in Sierra Leone

Solectek and Atlas Communications partner to roll out Solectek's SkyWay-MAX last-mile access solution along with its LM Series microwave backhaul to build a total wireless network.

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) February 27, 2009 -- Solectek Corporation (www.solectek.com), a leading manufacturer of wireless broadband equipment based in San Diego, announced that it received orders from Atlas Communications for 3.5 GHz WiMAX systems to be deployed in Sierra Leone. Atlas Communications will begin its wireless broadband data service based on Solectek's 802.16d WiMAX platform from the capital city of Freetown and will expand to the rest of the country. Atlas will utilize the 3.5 GHz spectrum license recently awarded by the National Communications Commission. In addition, Solectek will provide its licensed microwave PTP products, the LM Series, for wireless backhaul and in effect will become the total wireless solution provider to Atlas Communications. By using wireless technologies from Solectek from last mile access to backbone, Atlas Communications will be able to avoid expensive cabling investments and bypass the use of landlines held by incumbent telephone companies.

"We are extremely excited to participate in wireless service rollouts in emerging African countries like Sierra Leone. We believe our WiMAX platform is the perfect vehicle with its unparalleled long-range capability," said Dr. Eric Lee, CEO for Solectek. "We chose Solectek because of its solid reputation in the broadband wireless industry. In fact, their products came highly recommended via well respected references. Solectek's large-cell WiMAX architecture allows us to deploy far fewer base stations than other systems we considered," said Mr. Antony Nwokeukwu, CEO of Atlas Communications.

After a rapid installation and test cycle, Atlas plans to start the service by May 1st 2009. "The pent up demand for service is real and we would like to go to the market shortly. WiMAX is just about the only solution for us to reduce the cost of upfront investment and rapidly begin the service," says Mr. Nwokeukwu. Atlas Communications plans to have a nationwide presence within eighteen months.
